Import Export Code (IEC) Registration in RaipurOverview & Compliance
Chartered Accountancy advisory and audit services in Raipur, Chhattisgarh & Kalahandi, Odisha. Partner-led verification ensuring full statutory compliance under applicable laws.
No shipment clears Indian customs, inbound or outbound, without an Import Export Code attached to it. No bank will process an international trade payment without one. It is the single document that stands between a business and legal cross-border trade — cheap and quick to obtain, and yet the one compliance item that businesses most often let lapse silently, because unlike most registrations it does not simply sit quietly once granted.
We obtain and maintain IEC registration for businesses across Raipur and Chhattisgarh engaged in import or export of goods or services.
What it is and who needs it
The Import Export Code is a ten-digit number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade, and it is in fact the applicant's own PAN — the registration formally attaches trading rights to that PAN rather than issuing a separate number to remember. Any person or entity engaged in importing or exporting goods or services for commercial purposes requires one.
Without a valid IEC: customs will not clear a shipment at any port, airport or land border; banks will not process inward or outward remittances connected to the trade; export promotion councils will not accept registration; and none of the government's export incentive schemes are available. These are not separate inconveniences — they compound, since a shipment held at customs and a blocked remittance for the same consignment can happen simultaneously.
Registration
The process is entirely online, through Form ANF-2A on the DGFT portal, requiring PAN, Aadhaar-based verification, bank account details, and basic business information. The government fee is ₹500, and the certificate is typically issued within one to three working days of a complete application.
Businesses sometimes land on unauthorised third-party sites that mimic the DGFT portal and charge considerably more than the government fee — the only legitimate route is the DGFT's own website.
The annual update almost every business misses
An IEC has lifetime validity and never expires. But every holder must log in to the DGFT portal and confirm or update their details every year between 1 April and 30 June. This applies whether or not anything has actually changed since the previous year — the confirmation itself is the requirement, not merely a mechanism for reporting changes. It costs nothing if completed within the window.
An IEC that is not updated within the window is deactivated. A deactivated IEC behaves, for practical purposes, as though it does not exist: shipments are held, payments are blocked, and the business's ability to trade internationally simply stops, often without much warning until a consignment is actually held at a port.
This is precisely the kind of obligation that gets forgotten. Nothing about day-to-day trading prompts a business to think about it, the code itself never expires so there is no renewal reminder in the ordinary sense, and a business that traded without incident the previous year sees no reason to expect a problem this year. We track this for clients rather than leaving it to memory.
Reactivation, where an IEC has lapsed, is possible but interrupts trading in the meantime — exactly the outcome the annual update exists to prevent.
What follows registration
Holding an IEC is the entry ticket, not the whole of what a trading business needs. Depending on the goods and the trade in question, a business may also need registration with the relevant export promotion council to access incentive schemes, compliance with product-specific regulatory requirements — food products, for instance, require FSSAI registration or licensing in addition — and, for certain categories of goods, specific import or export licences beyond the IEC itself.
Scope of our work
We prepare and file the IEC application in Form ANF-2A; assist with the Aadhaar-based verification and bank details required; and — because this is where businesses most often come unstuck — track the annual update window each year and complete it on the client's behalf, so the code is never at risk of deactivation through an overlooked deadline. Where an IEC has already lapsed, we handle reactivation and advise on managing trade in the interim.
